Design Dialogues: Equity in Design

In the midst of a global civil rights movement, Design Sacramento is inviting designers from across local organizations and the Greater Sacramento creative community to participate in safe, open discussions about the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of black and brown people in the design industry.

According to AIGA’s 2019 Design Census, the U.S. design industry lacked representation of black and brown designers, with Black and Latinx designers comprising 3% and 8% of the industry respectively. Additionally, White and Asian designers comprised 71% and 9% respectively, with Native American and Native Hawaiian designers each comprising 0.2% and 0.3% respectively.

Our goal is to foster a constructive dialogue on the disparities black and brown designers face in the industry, in an effort to come up with actionable solutions we can take as individuals and organizations to dismantle prejudiced structural barriers and increase and uplift black and brown voices and faces in the design industry.
